Commission: Bridesmaid dresses to upcycled cushion

I’ve had a lovely – if busy – start to the New Year! I was so happy to get a commission to create a bespoke cushion from a couple of bridesmaid dresses – and even happier that I’m allowed to talk about it – most of my commissions are so personal that my customers prefer me not to share them. A wonderful way to start the year … I think I’m at my happiest when I’m working on something special for someone, creating a piece of memory cloth 🙂

The dresses arrived … such gorgeous fabric, and sumptuous colours …

A simple cushion, that makes the most of the fabric and the colours. A contemporary cushion, that won’t look dated or old-fashioned. A cushion that still evokes the memories of a very happy day.

Stripes …

The dark purple dominates, with the lilac strip from the skirt bordered from strips of the ivory dress – on one side, the sash – complete with the little flowers – and on the other, the the organza skirt fused onto the lining.

And on the back – an envelope closure … with a lilac strip that lines up with the one on the front.

I used the buttons from the bodice of the little dress.

I am so happy with the finished result … it will be going home in the post tomorrow.

Do you like it?

What could I do for you? Do you have a special dress, a suit you can’t part with, a collection of baby clothes that you’d like to free from the cupboard, transformed into something you can see – and use – every day?

If you’re interested in commissioning a piece of work, please do get in touch for a free consultation – I’d love to hear from you.

Boro cushion: “we have all the time in the world”

A while ago, just after my grandmother died, I was looking at her gold dress watches and wondering how to incorporate them into a piece of work … in the end, I came up with this boro piece of wall art, weaving the watches into the gold velvet and chiffon fabric.

Boro cloth - chiffon, velvet, vintage watches

It spoke to me so strongly of time and memory, of recapturing lost moments … I didn’t think I’d ever go down that road again.

Until I acquired a box of broken jewellery that had a number of vintage watches – none of which worked – included in it.

It seemed logical to revisit that earlier, personal piece:

This time, I have worked the boro in a red shot silk … the shimmer in it works beautifully with the watches … and they look like little jewels nestling into the fabric.

It ended up quite a small panel … it needed setting into a larger piece of fabric. I had the perfect piece waiting …. that black wool cloth. A peddler used to visit our house in Kuwait when I was little – I guess he came round about once a month – and mum always used to buy a piece of fabric from him. This is one of them. It’s a  lovely soft piece of cloth, and has this fantastic red stripe along the border that I’ve used on the back of the cushion …

Those brass-effect buttons look great with it, too …

cushion, black, red, vintage watches, boroI think this funky cushion needs to go into a study, or a home office, or perhaps into a cosy reading nook … anywhere you need reminding that you have the time you need to do what you want to do.

It’s available right now in my Etsy shop … or you can contact me if you’d like a similar piece using your own inherited treasures ….
