Camus and Cross Stitch – Burlap Sampler

I know, an unlikely combination …..

Those who follow me on facebook will know I’m riding a bit of a burlap obsession at the moment. But I do think that the coarse, open weave lends itself to cross-stitch almost perfectly ….. and so, I took some offcuts of burlap from a previous project, a little vintage lace, and an amazing quote from Albert Camus  – something that gives me hope and strength even at the darkest moments – and put them all together to create a burlap cross-stitch sampler …..

I’ve layered the strips of burlap over a piece of reclaimed denim, and then over a carefully frayed piece of burlap ….

The wording is worked in a vintage perle 5 – I adore that dark royal blue against the natural burlap ….

And I’ve used perle 8 in pristine white for the borders, fixing down each strip of burlap to the backing with a different row of counted-thread stitches each time …. from the top – herringbone stitch, chevron stitch, cretan stitch, fly stitch, double up-and-down buttonhole …

And then …. double chain stitch, four-sided stitch with star stitch in the intersections, feather stitch (sprinkled with my beloved french knots!) and buttonhole stitch with cross stitch above.

A lot of obsessive stitching happened ….. I couldn’t put it down …..

I enjoyed the meditative aspect of this, thinking on the words as I stitched them …. the meaning has deepened  and broadened ….. so that I think I might, with some of the other positive words that speak to me, stitch another one of these …..

This one, in the meantime, is, reluctantly, in my Etsy shop ….

Burlap and Lace Pillows

Today, I’m sharing with you a little collection of burlap and lace pillows  …. I just love the contrast of the coarse and sturdy burlap with the delicacy of the vintage linen and lace ….

burlap and lace french country cushions

It all started a while back …. I needed to recover a couple of chairs in our sitting room, and it needed to be something relatively inexpensive and hard wearing, as the children regularly throw food, drink and other dirt on the chairs – no matter what I do to try and stop them!

The chairs came out pretty well – and are holding up nicely. But I had some burlap left over after I was all done …. and that sort of thing nags at me.

It was rather accidental that I had some lace out, and just noticed how wonderfully it contrasted with the burlap …. but I guess that’s the nature of serendipity. And it seemed to me that the two fabrics together encapsulated everything I love best about modern country style – simple fabrics and textures,  but subtly feminine nonetheless. Shabby chic, without the fuss and frills ….

So – cushions, then …. and a chance to indulge myself and use some of my vintage linens and laces …..

Half a lace-edged crisp, white, vintage linen tray cloth appliqued onto one side, and strips of vintage lace trim on the other ……

And another, this time with a little cluster of fabric flowers ….. organza, tulle and lace …. set with vintage buttons

and with an antique lace doily taking centre stage …. I think this one is my favourite. There is less of a contrast in terms of tone, but the delicacy of the lace looks amazing over that burlap.

mmmmm – they look so good together ……

but equally delicious, I think, on their own.

And available now – along with some of my other cushions – in my Etsy store
