I know, an unlikely combination …..
Those who follow me on facebook will know I’m riding a bit of a burlap obsession at the moment. But I do think that the coarse, open weave lends itself to cross-stitch almost perfectly ….. and so, I took some offcuts of burlap from a previous project, a little vintage lace, and an amazing quote from Albert Camus – something that gives me hope and strength even at the darkest moments – and put them all together to create a burlap cross-stitch sampler …..
I’ve layered the strips of burlap over a piece of reclaimed denim, and then over a carefully frayed piece of burlap ….
The wording is worked in a vintage perle 5 – I adore that dark royal blue against the natural burlap ….
And I’ve used perle 8 in pristine white for the borders, fixing down each strip of burlap to the backing with a different row of counted-thread stitches each time …. from the top – herringbone stitch, chevron stitch, cretan stitch, fly stitch, double up-and-down buttonhole …
And then …. double chain stitch, four-sided stitch with star stitch in the intersections, feather stitch (sprinkled with my beloved french knots!) and buttonhole stitch with cross stitch above.
A lot of obsessive stitching happened ….. I couldn’t put it down …..
I enjoyed the meditative aspect of this, thinking on the words as I stitched them …. the meaning has deepened and broadened ….. so that I think I might, with some of the other positive words that speak to me, stitch another one of these …..
This one, in the meantime, is, reluctantly, in my Etsy shop ….
