3 bedspreads, 4 memory quilts

It all started with a request ….. would it be possible to transform 3 ancient, tattered and faded – but precious – bedspreads into 4 cot-size memory quilts?

“hmmmmmm,” I thought, “there’s a lot of unusable fabric in there, and what there is looks very thin and dreadfully fragile. But there is a lot of it, and I figured that fusible interfacing would reinforce the fabric so that it would be both usable, and enduring – up to a point. The resulting quilts won’t stand up to heavy use, but as little decorative things, I think they’ll be OK.”

So we started ….. I don’t generally show much of the design process – but this was a little different – we wanted to merge the quilts, and showcase the salvageable details as far as possible.

I could probably have done it in photoshop, but I enjoy the process of working with paper …. some printing, some cutting, some doodling ….. and we were away …

A lot of interfacing later, a lot of cutting happened …..  and then the piecing could start.

et voila …. 4 little quilt tops – all slightly different, and virtually the whole of the usable fabric from those bedspreads included.

For the quilting, we decided to pick up on the paisley theme in the fabrics ….

it’s quite time-consuming to quilt as this density across a whole quilt, but it worked so well on these I think it was worth it.
