Baby clothes …. keepsake memory quilt for a boy

Back on more familiar territory …. a bundle of little baby clothes to be transformed into a  keepsake memory quilt for a little boy …. and a request that any un-needed pieces should be returned intact.

Cue some very careful maths! 4″ squares work best for baby quilts, and I know I’m working to 40×48″ in terms of dimensions, so that’s 10×12 4″ squares (120 altogether!) …. put that against the number of pieces you can get from each garment (and it varies according to what it is, and what age it was made for!)  and you can figure out, fairly easily, how many clothes you need.

So, a little sorting needed ….. some to set aside and not touched, all the patterns, motifs and other specials into another pile, and then further  sifted so that the colours will co-ordinate nicely.

deconstruction, cutting pieces, sorting into colours and size ….

I worked out 4 different layout designs …. and this is the one we settled on ….. I love those darks on the diagonal ….

And sew (geddit?!) the piecing begins …. and it goes on and on and on until ….

we have a completed quilt top …. I just love all the little animals peeking out, and the cart-wheeling monkeys are just so cute!

and on to the quilting …. we chose this lovely pale blue vintage flanellette sheeting – it’s worn, and soft, and just perfect against the delicate colours in the quilt top ….

A bit of a departure on the quilting front …. the same chevron quilting I used in this quilt  …. it’s nice to get out of the ditch every now and again!

A foldover binding, slip-stitched closed …. obsessively neatly mitred corners 😉

and done ….

all ready for snuggly up, and stories in the chair …
