Serendipity

One of the best things about being a textile artist is that friends and family will often bring me back gifts of fabric, trims and other notions when they go off on their travels.

A couple of weeks ago, I was given this little pile of treasures from Holland:

A lovely mixture of ribbons and trim and a couple of packs of fat quarters. See the trim in the bottom left corner?

Here it is again … completely by chance, the perfect binding for the ‘Bless This House’ quilted cushion – the little flowers echo the quilted flowers on the patchwork and the colours are just perfect. What a happy accident that I received the exact thing I needed to finish this piece just when I needed it.

I love the process of creating, but there’s nothing to beat the satisfaction of finishing a piece, especially when it’s something that means so much to the recipient … a unique piece that captures memory and love and expresses it in a simple object that brings those memories and that love to mind every time it’s seen. And, hopefully, it will be seen every day.

Good luck in your new home Helen … I hope you and your family will be very happy there.

lucky lucky me

look what I got for my birthday:

Yep – an Ashford Tapestry Loom. All kinds of awesome … and can you imagine how excited I am? T’o-m had a moment of birthday inspiration and ordered it for me – without telling me or asking me if I wanted it – and had it all set up in the studio for me this afternoon.

It’s quite big, and rather daunting …. a bit like a roller-coaster ride. I want a go … but it’s SCARY. All the weaving I’ve done so far has been small-scale, on make-shift looms. This is serious stuff …. but I’m *so* excited about starting in on my first project. I have no idea, yet, what it will be … but luckily, I got a couple of ancillary presents to help out:

What looks like an *excellent* book on tapestry weaving, that’ll help me get off the ground without over-complicating my first sampler piece, and the Texere Yarns catalogue WITH a voucher for my first yarn order.

I’m in heaven!

I’m so lucky! Not only to have a partner who knows me so well he can come up with such a FABULOUS birthday present, but also to have the opportunity to expand my work into a whole new and exciting direction.

Now, where shall I start?
